Delaware Civil Union Equality Act of 2011
Effective January 1, 2012, the Delaware Civil Union Equality Act recognizes civil unions (a legal union between two persons of the same sex). According to the Act, partners in a legal civil union are to be afforded all the same rights, benefits and protections, and shall be subject to the same responsibilities as married persons under Delawarelaw. The term “spouse,” as used in Delawareissued, fully-insured insurance policies, contracts, or applications, will include the same-sex spouse of aDelaware recognized legal civil union. The spouse and children of that legal civil union will be considered dependents and afforded the same rights and obligations as dependents of opposite-sex couples.
