HSA Deductible Change Impact on Transitional Relief and Grandfathered Plans in 2018

The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) has changed the health savings account (HSA) deductible limit for 2018 from $1,300 to $1,350 for self-only coverage and from $2,600 to $2,700 for family and embedded deductible coverage. UnitedHealthcare plans will change to comply with these new deductible limits. All transitional relief groups with renewals on or after Jan. 1, 2018 are impacted.

UnitedHealthcare sent a letter to transitional relief customers on Oct. 1 that were renewing Dec. 1, 2017 through Nov. 1, 2018. We communicated the 2018 deductible change. This ensures that the HSA plans are compliant with the IRS requirement and will maintain their tax advantage status. 

For customers already on an Affordable Care Act (ACA) plan, the change to the HSA limit will occur at the time of their 2018 renewal. The standard renewal package will inform the groups of the HSA deductible limit change.
