New “Step-up Preventive” Dental Benefit Design Now Available

Please note: The “Step-up Preventive” plan design is not available in New York.
A new progressive dental benefit design, “Step-up Preventive,” is now available for Dental Preferred Provider Organization and Dental In-Network Only plans for all self-funded and fully insured customers with 100 or more employees, cases effective Jan. 1.
The new design option helps make UnitedHealthcare’s dental portfolio more flexible and competitive as it encourages routine care and rewards members with higher coverage when they get their annual preventive dental care.

- Currently filed and approved in all states effective Jan. 1 – New York excluded
How it Works
When a dental member completes their preventive dental care requirements, they will “step up” to a higher coinsurance benefit the following year. This is designed to help motivate annual member action while helping them decrease future out-of-pocket costs as long as they continue to receive their annual preventive care.
In addition to helping increase member engagement, the plan design helps decrease utilization of high-cost services by identifying potential health issues early and reducing the overall claims expense of the customer. It can also help encourage member and group retention.
